Frequently asked questions
Answers to the questions we hear most from local business owners.
Cost and the basics
How much does a bookkeeper cost for a small business?
We work on a set monthly fee, so you know up front exactly what you'll pay each month. Our fees start at $396 a month plus GST for monthly cash coding with a limited number of transactions. You can add payroll or weekly accrual coding to suit your business, for an additional fee.
What's the difference between a bookkeeper, a BAS agent and an accountant?
The services can overlap, which is why it gets confusing. Here's a quick breakdown.
An accountant
- Gives taxation advice
- Lodges tax returns
- Gives business structure advice
- Provides strategic planning for growth
- Is a registered tax agent
A bookkeeper
- Completes bank reconciliations
- Prepares monthly or quarterly BAS and IAS
- Processes income and expenses
- Prepares and lodges payroll and super
- Analyses income and expenses
- Is a registered BAS agent
A bookkeeper can't lodge your BAS or payroll (STP) unless they're a registered BAS agent. SB Books is a registered BAS agent, so we can do both.
What does a registered BAS agent do, and why does it matter?
A registered BAS agent can lodge Business Activity Statements and Single Touch Payroll (STP) for your business. They've been trained in these areas and their knowledge has been formally signed off, so you know the person handling your BAS is qualified to do it.
Can you lodge my BAS for me?
Yes. We're a registered BAS agent, so we can prepare and lodge your BAS for you.
Do I actually need a bookkeeper, or can I do it myself?
It depends on how complicated your business is. Even if you do your own books, it's always a good idea to have someone check the entries in your software before your BAS is prepared.
Is a bookkeeper cheaper than an accountant?
Yes. A bookkeeper prepares and lodges your work based on what you provide, so it costs less. An accountant gives you advice on the future direction of your business.
Is it worth paying for bookkeeping?
Yes. A bookkeeper makes sure your file is accurate and ready for your accountant to do your end-of-year tax. If your file isn't accurate, your accountant can spend extra time making corrections before they even start on your tax, and that means a bigger bill than you expected.
Are bookkeeping fees tax deductible?
Yes.
Can you help if my books are behind?
Yes. We'll do a once-off tidy-up of your books. Catch-up work is charged by the hour rather than as a set fee.
Payroll, software and training
Do you do payroll and Single Touch Payroll (STP)?
Yes, for a set fee based on the number of staff you employ. To lodge STP for another business you must be a registered agent, so make sure whoever does your payroll is fully qualified.
When is STP finalisation due, and what happens if I miss it?
STP finalisation is due by 14 July each year. Your staff can't do their own personal tax returns until it's done, and if you lodge late you risk a fine.
Which accounting software do you work with?
Xero, MYOB, Employment Hero, Maxtel, BOS and Definitiv.
Can you help me choose or set up accounting software?
Yes. When picking a program, we work with your accountant and take into account any software you've used before and what your business needs. We can then do a setup and training package tailored to you.
What does your software training cover, and who is it for?
Our training is for business owners and partners. It's tailored to you and your business, as part of our setup and training package.
How long does training take, and what support do I get afterwards?
We offer a 2-day training package, which includes 1 month of phone support afterwards.
Working with SB Books
What kinds of businesses do you work with?
We work with a wide range of businesses, including medical (such as dental and optical), trades (such as plumbers and electricians), retail and wholesale, takeaway shops, transport and real estate.
Do you only work with Ipswich businesses?
No. We're based in Ipswich, but we work with businesses all over Queensland.
Do you work on-site or remotely?
Thanks to modern accounting software, we can now work remotely. If you need training, you're welcome to come into our office.
How often should my bookkeeping be done?
It depends on the size of your business. It could be anywhere from daily to weekly or monthly.
What do I need to give you to get started?
Just the details of how many transactions you have and how often you'd like us in your file.
Do you work with my existing accountant?
Yes. We work with many existing accountants, and we're happy to work with a new one too.
Is AI going to replace my bookkeeper?
AI can take over some of the work, but it can't do everything. It's unlikely to replace a good bookkeeper.
How quickly can you start, and how do I get in touch?
Once you've accepted and signed our proposal, we have a one-week handover. To get started, call us on 07 3810 8366 or send us a message through our contact page.
